Places to see in Japiur

  • City Palace The vast majority of the City Palace can be seen as part of the Sawai Man Singh Museum. Only the small section is still inhabited by the royal family. The City Palace was commissioned by Jai Singh (1728-32) and later extended several times. The building contains a good collection of old textiles and royal family jewelry. In addition there is a weapons collection on display. Visiting this place at your Jaipur Tours is highly recommendable. Particularly interesting are the collections of old manuscripts and India miniatures.
  • Hawa Mahal (Wind Palace) The Wind Palace (Hawa Mahal) was built by Sawai Pratap Singh in 1799. The five-storey consists mainly of a façade and is a great illusion of the values of Rajput culture. It has almost 900 windows, allowing the many women of the palace to observe processions and what was happening on the streets without having to be seen by others.
  • The custom of purdah is widespread amongst Rajputs. It forbids unknown men to see women’s face. The walk through the various storeys affords wonderful views of the City Palace to the west of the Hawa Mahal as well as the city of Jaipur. The name Wind Palace comes from the fresh breeze that blows into small windows.
  • Jantar Mantar These curious buildings were built under Jai Singh between 1728 and 1734 in order to measure the planets’ movements and thus to improve the calendar. Every one of the 16 instruments had a specific function, and these are explained during the informative guided tours to Rajasthan. The large 27m/ 90ft Samrat Yatra is still used during the traditional Guru Purnima Festival (July/ August) to predict the strength of next years’ monsoon.
  • Rambagh Palace Rambagh Palace, the Maharaja’s former garden palace, is now converted into a luxury hotel, a stay at this palace on your fascinating Golden Triangle tours will add more colors to your trip.
