Daman and Diu is a Union Territory that is located on the west coast of India. Daman and Diu are two separate regions, located within the state of Gujarat. Daman is a coastal town situated close to the town of Vapi in Gujarat, while Diu is located near Junagarh in the Saurashtra Peninsula of Gujarat. Daman and Diu were part of the Portuguese territories in India along with Goa and was joined to the Indian Union in 1961. Goa, Daman and Diu were part of a single Union Territory till 1987 till Goa became a separate state. Daman is the administrative headquarters of Daman and Diu.
Daman boasts of a rich historical heritage spanning for more than 2000 years. The historical structures in Daman proclaim this union territories rich culture and history. Daman and Diu Tourism under the guidance of the Archaeological Survey of India maintains these monuments.
Daman is divided by the Damanganga River into two regions known as Moti Daman and Nani Daman. Moti Daman is the new town with wide roads and houses the famous17th century church, the Se Cathedral and a lighthouse. Nani Daman is the older town and has the Church of Our Lady of Rosary.Daman and Diu Tourism proudly showcases the few temples in Daman. On the banks of the Damanganga River is an 18th century Jain Temple which is famous for the murals on the walls. In Dabhel village is the Somnath Mahadev Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Daman and Diu Tourism offers various avenues to explore the state’s abundant coastline. Devka Beach and Jampore Beach are two of the most frequented beaches.Diu is an island off the coast of the Arabian Sea, near the port of Veraval. Diu is connected by two bridges to the mainland. Like Daman, Diu too has its own share of monuments. The Fort of Diu is an impressive structure situated on the coast and is surrounded by the sea. The fort has a light house and several canons.Diu is famous for its churches built by the Portuguese. St. Paul’s Church, St. Francis of Assisi, and St. Thomas Church are some of the prominent ones.
Daman and Diu Tourism arranges the Diu Festival every year in December to encourage tourism.Diu has some fine beaches. The main beaches are Nagoa Beach, Ghoghla Beach, and Jallandhar Beach. Diu is also noted for its birdlife and many migratory birds visit the island.The INS Khukri Memorial is one of Daman and Diu Tourism departments’ main attractions. INS Khukri during the India-Pakistan War in 1971, fell prey to three torpedoes fired by a Pakistani submarine and sank along with its crew of 18 Officers and 176 sailors.
